You currently hold a valid Class 2 or Class 3 driver's licence in Alberta.

A faster route to Class 1 for experienced commercial drivers ready to upgrade.
Who qualifies
Experienced drivers can upgrade to a Class 1 licence through Alberta's Class 1 Learning Pathway for Experienced Drivers if you:
2+ years of experience
At least two years driving commercial vehicles, so you already have real road time.
3+ axle vehicles
Your experience is on vehicles with three or more axles — the foundation for Class 1.
How the equivalency works
Because you already have commercial experience, the pathway is streamlined into four clear steps.
Pass the knowledge test
Experienced drivers take the Class 1 knowledge test before starting formal training.
Complete 40 hours of training
Mandatory in-school training through a licensed school refreshes inspections, air brakes, manoeuvring, and defensive driving.
Pass the road test
On success you receive a provincially restricted Class 1 licence, valid for driving within Alberta.
Go interprovincial (optional)
Complete the Competence Building Program (17–25 hours) to remove the restriction and drive across provinces.
